VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2009: WILDWOOD FOREST
DISCOVERING THE UNTAMED NATURE OF GOD

During the week of June 8th, our sanctuary was transformed into the “Wildwood Forest,” where we hosted 155 children from preschool age through 6th grade for the 2009 Ecumenical Vacation Bible School, focusing on the theme of “Discovering the Untamed Nature of God.” For more than two decades, our church has partnered with First Presbyterian Church, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, and St. Edward’s Catholic Church to host an ecumenical vacation Bible school for the children of Licking County. In addition to the children, we also hosted dozens of teen and parent volunteers, who came to know our church, its people, and our mission through this year’s VBS.

Our CE building was also transformed for VBS 2009 to represent a Honduran treehouse. For this year’s mission project, we were introduced to the children and mission of Montana de Luz (Mountain of Light), an orphanage for children with HIV/AIDS in Honduras. The VBS children were asked to bring a coin offering all week, which will be used to build a treehouse for the children of Montana de Luz. Our children also wrote letters to the children in Honduras as they learned about life in Honduras and life with HIV/AIDS.

Please give your hearty thanks to our First Baptist volunteers who made this year’s VBS possible: Kathy Hurt (coordinator), Louise Gemmell (asst. coordinator), Diane Jacquish (set up), Bobbi Jacquish (teen volunteer), Claire Jacquish (teen volunteer), Gwyenth Chmara-Huff (parent volunteer), Zed Huff (teen volunteer), Nancy Reeb (nursery volunteer), Sylvia Neidner (teacher), and all those who donated time and materials for VBS.

Sunday School for Children and Youth

Children and Youth study Christian Faith Sunday Morning, 9:45 am

The Children's Sunday School is located in the Christian Education Building, 111 West Broadway, on the west side of the main church. If you have any questions, please call the church office at (740)587-0336.

The First Baptist Church Sunday School serves infants through high school aged young people. The curriculum is consistent with the inclusive values that our Adult Sunday School provides.  We use the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum www.spiritseasons.com .

We welcome and affirm children coming from different kinds of families and different faith traditions. We teach traditional Baptist values including "soul competence" which says that every Believer is able to discern a relationship with God that is right and true. Our church practices the ordinances of Baptism and The Lord's Supper (Communion). We teach about these ordinances in our curriculum with sensitivity to the mutifaith attendace that we enjoy. As a Baptist Church, we do not rely on teaching written doctrine. We encourage discussion of and constructive engagement with the Bible. We also incorporate truths from other faith traditions.

We hope that you will join us in our community of Believers as we teach our children the God-given gifts of Christian love, independent thinking, and the rightness of a challenging and inclusive approach to faith.
